Siddhars and experts classified severally 108 varmam in the different characteristics of the varmam.  These classifications express on the base of the places, nature, characteristics and the usage of treatment of varmam.

The classification of varmam:

  1. Traumatic classification
  2. Classification on the basis of channels
  3. Classification on the basis of Aatharam
  4. Humoral classification
  5. Classification based on five elements.
  6. Numerical classification
  7. Regional classification

Clasification based on traumatic:

Varmam can be classfied into two according to the trauma occured.

  1. Padu varmam –        12
  2. Thodu varmam –        96

Total varmam                –      108

  1. Thodu varmam (96) :

Thodu Varmam means varmam created by touching the varma places.  Further, these varmam can be created by pressing and manipulating on the varma places.  These varma also can be caused by the hand of enemies.  These varmam can made through pressing, massaging piercing pointedly, tapping, lifting, attacking, and pushing.

 “Kattana eerarum vali yettaki karuthinathal

                 Thoduvarmam thonootraru”.

            (Varma odivu murivu chara soothiram-1200)

The Thodu varma places are the junctions of muscles, nerves, veins, capillaries, arteries and bones.  According to varma kuru nadi,  thodu varmam have the characteristics of nerve.  Each nadis  touches, eight varma places.  This also may be the reason these varma places are called as “Thodu Varmam”  (12×8 = 96)

Classification  of nadis :

Vasi  otherwise the Pranan moves through 12 Nadis (channels).  These 12 channels are related to the 12 Padu varmas, ie,  these 12 padu varmas are considered to be the  “Sub varmam” of the 12 channels.

  1. Chulimunai nadi varmam     –       9
  2. Pinkalai nadi varmam          –        9
  3. Edakalai nadi varmam         –        9
  4. Sinkuvai nadi varmam         –       9
  5. Purudan nadi varmam         –        9
  6. Kanthari nadi varmam         –       9
  7. Athi nadi varmam               –        9
  8. Allampudai nadi varmam    –       9
  9. Sankini nadi varmam          –       9
  10. Kuhu nadi varmam    –       9
  11. Paisini nadi varmam            –      9
  12. Visuvotharai nadi varmam  –       9

Total Varmam            –   108

Each nadi is related to eight thodu (12×8=96) varmam  and these varmam are called as joint – varmam.  Therefore each nadi  is related to a padu varmam and eight thodu varmam ie, totally nine varmam.

2.12.3. Classification  on the basis of Atharam

  5. Visuththi varmam                        15
  6. Aakinai varmam                          32

Total varmam            108

Varma odivu murivu chara soothiram – 1200,classifies varma on thebasis of the six aatharas.Few varmam located around  a particular atharams are grouped as the varmam related to that particular Atharam.

Thridosha classification:

Vatha , Pitha and Kapa  are called  as thridosha..  Varmam is classified also on the basis of  the thridosha.

  1. Vatha varmam  64
  2. Pitha varmam  26
  3. Kaba varmam 6
  4. Vathathontha varmam 4
  5. Pithathontha varmam 5
  6. Kabathontha varmam 3

Total varmam       108

2.12.5. Classification on the basis of five elements:

According to Varma Aanni Soothiram  – 100, the Varma points are classified on the based on the five elements

  1. Prithivi varmam 36
  2. Appu varmam 15
  3. Theyu varmam 32
  4. Vayu varmam  13
  5. Aakaya varmam 12

Total varmam       108

2.12.6. Numerical classification:

According to Agasthiar Varma Sari – 205, the varma points are classified on the numerical basis as two. Each varmam is included under any one of these two.

  1. Odd varmam 48
  2. Even varmam 60

Total varmam             108

2.12.7. Regional classification:

The human body is divided into 5 regions.  The varma points situated on these places are  classified based on those regions.

Varma Beeranki – 100, Varma Kannadi – 500 and Varma Lada Soothiram – 300 classified the varma points on the basis of  regions.

  1. Varmas above the neck         25
